Final Visualizations of My Patterns

Here is the hand-made pattern, I scanned it into Photoshop  then used a basic half drop repeat to create the finished design. I initially thought these would look better as interiors or wallpaper, but after experimenting with fashion, I decided the prints were more suited to a fashion outcome.

This is my CAD Collection outcome, I have used two designs from my collection for this visualization, these definitely look better used in an interiors situation as the print is very geometric and simple.

I am very happy with my final outcome in this video project, my animation is smooth with no clear jumps or gaps, I really enjoyed the process of both making the installation and the stop-motion film itself. Here is my final video.

Here is my final CAD collection, I will continue to develop these into situ but these are the final pieces. They create a collection because they all use the same colour scheme and motif, the placements have changed and so have the colour reversals.

These are my final designs for my hand-made collection, the media I used was mainly brusho, batik and stitch, I really like the texture of these pieces and the way that the brusho and batik have changed the surface of the paper. I am going to experiment with these in photoshop and develop them into situ.

This is my first full sketchbook on the project 'Time Redressed' and here is a practice stop-motion animation of my book, this is practice using a movie maker ready for the stop-motion short films of our 'yarn bomb' installation.

Samples and Experiments

Focused Sampling and Experimentation

I decided that my experiments needed more focus on the textural, colour and media usage side. As before my samples were mainly focused on using pens, biro's and fine-liners. I developed my prints from the workshop as well by incorporating stitch and using layering techniques to give the pieces more texture.

My favorite one of the above would have to be the uneven grid print which i have then stitched, painted, scratched and drawn into, this piece is a great starting point for my CAD or Hand Drawn collections.

Here are some of my favorite prints from the workshop, I mainly focused of harmonious and analogous colours such as red, blue and purple. These are my favorite few prints out of many as I see that these have potential for motifs and the beginning of a repeat pattern for fashion, interior or gift-ware.

I am very happy with how this piece went, at first I was concerned that putting it on a lager scale would lose the form and the effect of the think and thin line usage. I love the curvature of the forms, they give a very delicate and flowing effect which I think describes our installation also.

I really like this piece, the lines which overlap and go over each other are very delicate and refined, the lines show curvature which is portrayed as delicate.

Refined Study and Embroidery:

I used brusho to create the washed background so I wasn't just working on plain white, I focused on the colours in our piece and decided that the most appropriate was Turquoise and Scarlet. I used a fine liner to draw the negative space around the string, I think its come out with some very interesting forms which I love. For my A2 Piece I am going to recreate the drawn one, I will use a brusho background and focus on line and form.

Here are all my observational drawings (too many to photograph separately), these are small sketches done on location of the yarn bomb using different techniques such as:

• Broken line
• Continuous line
• Drawing with other hand
• Series of timed sketches (1, 2, 3, 5, 7 minutes)
• Looking from different angles

• Surface and colour changes to the background
• Using mixed medias (pens, fine liners, biros, pastels, oils, pencils)

Evaluation of the Finished Piece

I think our Yarn Bomb went very well, we cooperated well as a group giving each person a chance to do everything and incorporating everyone's ideas into the final installation. 

We did change the design after we had finished the parts we had planned as we decided it did not have 'enough to it', so we made some design changes, such as the lose string which drapes over the alcove.

If we were to redo this installation I would give myself much more time and material which would give the piece more bulk and layers to work on, there would also be more of a curtain of fabric using various techniques to experiment with such as crochet and plaiting. I would also work more into the banister and railings with the yarn, ribbon and strings.

Frequency: every minute for the camera on the tripod (to capture the whole environment) and no time allocation on the second camera as we will use that to focus in and out of the installation, zooming in on various sections. We will swap who uses the camera in the team every five minutes so everyone has a go at yarn bombing and the responsibility is shared fairly.

We are going to use lots of different colours, we are mainly selecting bright, patterned, bold and psychedelic colours inspired by the artist Sarah Applebaum.

The techniques we are going to use are:

• knotting
• layering
• fraying
• plaiting

We will start from one railing on the stairs and work our way down allowing the material to fall.

Project Brief

Project Brief 

For this project we creating a piece of urban art (Yarn bombing), we are going to plan our installations and follow a design process, documenting techniques, materials and progress in our sketchbooks as we go along.

Whilst doing this we are going to take a series of pictures documenting the change in the environment, this will go on to become a short stop motion film.

Our experiments, drawings and samples will go on to develop into two print collections (one hand drawn and one CAD assisted), our prints will the be portrayed via fashion or interior outcomes.
